Began singing songs

 It is said that he began singing since he was five. He began working in the cotton fields from that time on. Twice a year, his family farm was flooded away and he later wrote a song about this flood, Five Feet High and Rising.

Joined United States Air Force

He struggled a lot financially as a child. Then in July 1959, he joined United States Air Force. He was later stationed at the 12th Radio Squadron Mobile in Germany. While he was there he also formed his first band, The Landsberg Barbarians.
