Jon worked as a freelance writer and broadcaster until he joined BBC as a reporter and producer for BBC Radio Solent in 1983. He worked as a chief political correspondent and BBC's Paris correspondent before joining The Political Show on BBC One in 2005.
Sopel also co-presented BBC News Channel and presented the news programme, Global with Jon Sopel on BBC World News. He was later appointed as the BBC's North America Editor. Additionally, he is also an ambassador for The Prince's Trust.
