Mayme Edna, Morgan’s mother separated from her alcoholic husband and moved to Tennessee and again back to Mississippi, Greenwood, where his mother settled her family. At the early age of 6, Freeman’s lost his grandmother with whom he spent a major part of his life. As a kid, Freeman often used to visit local Movie Treater and see movies and was deeply inspired by the works of actors like Gary Cooper, Spencer Tracy, and Sidney Poitier.

During his school days in Morgan Junior High School, Freeman was ordered to participate (as a punishment) in the school’s drama competition where he surprised everyone taking top honors in the program. This became his first accomplishment as an actor and a performer. Freeman, later after his high school joined Air Force to become a fighter pilot, however, his love for acting eventually had him quit his studies and follow his dream to become an actor.
