American singer and multi-instrumentalist Julien Baker turned professional in 2014, is widely famous for her blues and hymns. Being raised in a Christian household, the 25-year-old openly lesbian singer embraces those unlikely combinations with pride & sought music career success since the release of her debut album Sprained Ankle (2015).

Starting with a deal with 6131 Records, Baker's deeply personal & confessional songwriting, saw her approach from Matador Records, to whom she signed in 2017 & has released further 2 albums. Since 2018, she is a member of the indie rock band Boygenius.

The Tennessee native got exposure to music at an early age in the church & was playing music by then. While at Arlington High School, she co-founded a band named Star Killers, which renamed Forrister in 2015.

After graduation, Julien enrolled at Middle Tennessee State University and studied audio engineering but switched to literature and secondary education later. By the first year in MTSU, Baker showed wide interest in songwriting & singing and struck a deal with 6131 Records- the record label discovered her songs as she used to put them on Bandcamp.

On October 23, 2015, Julien Baker released her debut album Sprained Ankle which got critical acclaim; most of her songs deal with spirituality, addiction, mental illness & human nature. The albums consist of songs Sprained Ankle, Brittle Boned, Go Home and Something.

To work on her tours full-time, she left her studies before her return in 2019 to complete the degree.

Deal With Matador Records & Further Success

In 2016, the American singer released two EPs: Spotify Sessions and Audiotree Live, on May 20 and October 22 respectively. She signed a deal with Matador Records in 2017 and subsequently released songs Funeral Pyre and Distant Solar Systems.

Her second album Turn Out the Lights with the aforementioned record label released on October 27, 2017, and charted #78 on the US Billboard 200. Moreover, it peaked up #3 in US Folk & #9 in the US Indie chart.

Aside from going solo, in 2018, along with Phoebe Bridgers and Lucy Dacus, the Turn Out the Lights singer formed an indie rock band Boygenius. The band has released two EPS so far: Boygenius (October 26. 2018) which charted #57 in Billboard 200; and Boygenius (demos) released on July 3, 2020.

On February 26, 2021, Baker's solo third album Little Oblivions was released.

Throughout these years, Julien Baker has collaborated with many artists including Touché Amoré, Frightened Rabbit (Scottish band), Mary Lambert, Hayley Williams, and Becca Mancari.
