Sue Herera announces on air that NFL's Twitter account was hacked and Roger Goodell is alive

Susan McMahon, known professionally as Sue Herera, an American CNBC reporter announces on air that the official NFL Twitter account was hacked Tuesday morning. As a result, a post was tweeted with false information that Commissioner Roger Goodell had died. This went on air only minutes after a graphic appeared on the screen of CNBC reporting the unverified news. However, CNBC did not respond to requests for comment about this incident.

“We regret to inform our fans that our commissioner, Roger Goodell, has passed away. He was 57. #RIP,” the tweet said, which the NFL has since deleted. This original tweet about Goodell's death was retweeted over 2,000 times within minutes of it being posted.

Moments later the first tweet appeared, Brian McCarthy, the league’s vice president of communications, confirmed via his Twitter account that the “NFL Twitter account was hacked” and Goodell is “alive and well.”

The hacker continued to toy with the account, sending more tweets mocking the NFL. Two tweets followed on the NFL’s official account shortly after the first was deleted. It read “Oi, I said Roger Goodell has died. Don’t delete that tweet,” and the hacker wrote in a second tweet,“OK, OK you amateur detectives win. Good job”.

"We have engaged law enforcement to look into the matter," the NFL said in a statement on Tuesday. "We are reviewing and strengthening our cyber-security measures."

Roger Goodell was even found joking about this incident on twitter the same day.

As commissioner of the National Football League, Roger Goodell is one of the most powerful men in sports. Estimates suggest that Goodell's net worth is of around $75 million at the age of 57. Goodell took over as NFL commissioner in 2006, and his power and personal wealth have increased dramatically in the years that followed.
