Due to complications from an inoperable tumor on his liver, Roberts took his last breath at 3:30 pm on Monday, July 24, 2017, in the arms of his beloved wife Kathleen DuPont McGuire, surrounded by his family and loved ones. He was buried at Morning Watch Hill Cemetery in Boone, North Carolina.
