Born in Clarksdale, Mississippi, William attended Albany State University on a football scholarship. He also served as a correctional officer until his resignation in 1997. Ross made his debut Ain't Shhh to Discuss under the pseudonym Teflon Da Don.

His debut album Port of Miami was released in 2006 and got the top spot on the U.S. Billboard 200 album chart. Ross made guest performances on two singles from DJ Khaled's album Listennn...the Album. Port of Miami received a gold certification from the Recording Industry Association of America. 

In 2013, Ross premiered the first official single from his album Mastermind. No Games featuring Future was released to Urban Contemporary Radio. 2015 was the year in which he released a mixtape named Black Dollar and a remix tape Renzel Remixes.

Rick Ross signed a record deal with Epic Records. In 2016, he collaborated with Skrillex for the song Purple Lamborghini.

In 2010, the rapper hosted a blood drive to help the people affected by the Haiti earthquake. He also donated iPads and Reeboks to his high school in Florida. Likewise, Rick Ross has also formed his foundation which is named In A Big Way Charity.
