Born and raised in Vancouver, British Columbia, Emily started out on her career at an early age. Emily attended the Vancouver Film School, and on completion, Emily turned to the industry with the hope of playing her luck in acting.

Emily was first introduced to the audience by the Canadian band Nickelback in 2009. In 2012, Emily had her first minor movie role in the film Random Acts of Romance, starring English-Candian actress Amanda Tapping.

Following a few minor movie roles, Emily got her breakthrough with the role of Felicity Smoak in the TV series Arrow, in 2012.

Emily was originally signed as a guest star for just an episode, but after positive reviews from her co-stars and from Warner Brothers producer Peter Roth, Emily became a full-timer on the show. The success of Felicity Smoak and positive response from fans led Emily to appear in the spin-off shows, The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, Vixen, and Supergirl.

In the same year, 2012, Emily played Dite in the short film Bacon and Eggs, followed by her roles in Flicka: Country Pride the same year. In March 2014, Emily was cast as Kristen Rose Cowgirls in Angels: Dakota's Summer, which premiered at the 2014 Dallas International Film Festival. In 2015, Emily was a part of the Oscar-nominated film Brooklyn, starring Saoirse Ronan and Emory Cohen.

In 2017, Emily starred alongside Matthew Glave in the comedy film Funny Story. The film premiered at the Slamdance Film Festival in January 2018. Emily's portrayal of Kim in Funny Story was well received by critics as well as by audiences. Her portrayal of Kim was described as,

impressively toe(ing) the line between blustery self-regard and the vulnerability it hides, exploring a broad spectrum of emotions and being able to hone in on the inherent conflict within Kimberly.

Funny Story went on to win the Stroman Audience Award for Best American Indie at the 2018 Sonoma International Film Festival.

Emily played the lead in Zayd Dohrn's production, Reborning for Reality Curve Theatre Group at the Annex Theatre in Vancouver. The production premiered on June 20, 2018, and the play was widely praised.
